From rapid execution to groundbreaking solutions, this design-build expansion project for an operating healthcare facility demonstrates the transformative power of collaborative and forward-thinking design and construction.
Due to the unexpected closing of a nearby hospital, leaders at Grady Memorial Hospital anticipated a dramatic need for ICU beds in the community and needed to act quickly. The Beck team was entrusted with a design-build challenge to redefine efficiency and showcase ingenuity in healthcare construction. The timeline was ambitious, less than a year. To add to the challenge, the project was located in an aging yet operating hospital. One of the highest priorities was the safety of patients and staff while minimizing disruptions.
The project added two state-of-the-art, 26-bed critical care units on the ninth and tenth floors of Grady Memorial Hospital. The expansion of the ICU required structural modifications, infrastructure modernizations, medical equipment enhancements and MEP (Mechanical, Electrical, Plumbing) and technology upgrades. The team worked together to execute a logistics and coordination plan that maintained infection control, safety and security, minimized impact on ongoing operations and provided clear and constant communication with the hospital administration.
The design-build delivery method, with The Beck Group acting as both architect and builder, played a crucial role in maintaining the project schedule and facilitating seamless collaboration between the design and construction phases. The combined efforts of the project team, including the owner's representatives and trade partners, ensured the project was completed on time and within budget.
