To meet Parkland’s urgent need for additional inpatient capacity, Beck completed the finish-out of two shell floors at the WISH tower, creating 112 new Med/Surg beds and a Med Secure unit. Each floor includes 16 private rooms and 40 semi-private rooms, designed to seamlessly match the hospital’s existing patient floors while expanding overall bed count.

The design balanced Parkland’s request for more centralized staff support with the decentralized model outside patient rooms. To achieve this, Beck introduced a hybrid approach that maintains decentralized workstations while also incorporating centralized nurse stations with multipurpose team spaces. Following the hospital’s original design principles, the on-stage/off-stage circulation concept was continued and adapted for the Med Secure unit.

Careful evaluation of the existing core ensured the infrastructure could support the increased bed count. Additional equipment rooms and duplicated support spaces were introduced where needed, while staff areas were carefully planned to accommodate expanded teams with functional, efficient workspace.
